The Settlements and Unclaimed Funds Guide

A free 26 page plain-English guide to how class action settlements and state unclaimed property programs work, what the notices mean, and how to recognize the scams that imitate both.

What is inside

  • The six stages of a class action, from filing through distribution, with realistic timelines
  • An annotated walkthrough of a settlement notice, showing which eight items to find and why each matters
  • Your three options as a class member, and what remaining silent actually does
  • What claim forms typically ask for, and how to reconstruct purchase records you no longer have
  • How state unclaimed property programs work, where to search for free, and which federal databases are separate
  • What a finder can and cannot legally charge, and when to skip one
  • A scam checklist covering advance fees, urgency tactics, and the requests no real administrator ever makes

The guide is educational. It does not evaluate individual cases, does not tell you whether you qualify for anything, and is not legal advice.

Why we wrote it

The processes described in this guide are public, free to use, and genuinely confusing. That combination is why a whole industry of paid intermediaries and outright fraud has grown up around them. Most of what those operations sell is the ability to read a notice and fill out a form.

The guide exists so that reading the notice and filling out the form stops being intimidating. It will not tell you whether any case applies to you, because nobody can tell you that without your records and, for anything consequential, a lawyer. If you would rather just read, the same ground is covered on our articles page.

Claim Your Settlements is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. Requesting this guide does not create an attorney client relationship and does not establish that you are eligible for or owed any settlement, payment, or property.
